YANPI-YANPI (King Brown Snake) One of the boys was in the house but his father had gone to get food. The other brother was on the bed listening to some music. Then a snake, a King Brown Snake, started coming towards him Now this little boy was sitting reading some books and there was no-one with him One boy was at one end of the house and the other boy at the other end of the house. Then a man happened to look towards the house and saw the King Brown Snake entering the doorway and he called out. “Grandson. King Brown Snake is coming towards you." The older boy heard him call out and came out and saw the snake He got a shock because he thought. “He will bite him." However the boy broke the louvres and got out and the man killed the snake. That’s all A TRIP TO NORTH GOULBURN (Werra) Mother and father said. “We will go to Werra and eat eggs and yams" Father got the paddle and sail and canon and he also got the dog that was good at hunting goannas. When they were there the women went out after yams, kuli yams and miyulum yams. They went until late afternoon when they returned to the grandmothers who were looking after the children and had already lit a fire They said. "We will cook the kuli yams and the miyulum yams." Now the kuli yams are cheeky yams so they took them and chopped them up and soaked them in the billabong until morning and by then all the poison had gone from them and then they came and got them and ate them. GETTING MALNGPI NUTS A long lime ago there were people living on Werra (North Goulburn Island) Some of the women went looking for yams And two girls said to each other. "Lets go and get malngpi nuts." So they went and saw some on the tree the big girl climbed up the tree and got them all and then jumped down to the ground and said. “Come on " Then they came to a little patch of jungle where there was a lizard. As they came to the jungle the lizard ran out and the two girls ran away to the beach. There they sat down and ate the maingpi nuts, those two girls. THE DOG THAT GOT LEFT BEHIND A lot of people went to Ulakpirij for the day. Mother look her dog and they went hunting. They stayed until the sun was going down but by then mother couldn't see the dog anywhere. The buck didn't come to pick them up either. So they said. "It probably isn't coming" Therefore they walked home. But mother's dog was lying in a cave. When the morning came he got up and ate a bit of fish and drank some water and then he look the road home and finally arrived When he saw him we said. "The dog has arrived home." THE BOY WHO MADE A BOAT A boy went to the creek and was sitting there watching the water running. Then he thought. "Yes I'll try to make a little boat." So he took a coconut and broke it in halves. He finished making it and then he took it and put it in the water where it floated. Therefore the boy was very happy. After a few days the boy went back to then creek but some other boys had gone down there and taken his boat. He went and looked about but he couldn't see therefore he went back home crying because they had thrown his boat away. WHEN THEY WENT TO THE MAINLAND A man and his wife went to the Mainland. They came along and landed their canoe at Wamarli. The man had his spear and axe and they were going to go and sit under the casurina trees there. Then he saw a wallaby drinking at the water hole. So the man crawled along and came close and speared him in the side and he fell down and then the man carried it to the beach. The wife saw it. "He has speared a wallaby for us that's really good because I'm hungry now." They cooked it up and ate the meat and then the man said. "Come on let's go." Then they got into the canoe and came back here to Martpalk. CROSSING THE BILLABONG Some women went over to Anjumu Billabong. There was so much water in the billabong that they couldn't cross over to the other side because it was too deep. So the women said to each other "How about we make a bark raft and get over to the other side." So they made one and took the little girl and put her on the raft and canned her over to the other side and so they came to the shore. When they arrived the others said to them "What did you do to get over this side?" Then one of the women said. "We came over in a little boat that a little fairy who is a friend of ours gave us.” THE HELICOPTER A long time ago the white man said to us. "A helicopter will be coming soon." And we said. "Is that so? let's go to the airstrip.“ So we waited and someone said. "There it is coming." lt came close and we were all afraid of it because the white man had said. "It lands on the sea and on houses too." And so we were afraid because we thought it might land on top of us Therefore when we saw it coming we used to run inside the houses and wait there for a while.
