This work fulfills the long-standing need for a comprehensive study of the animal tale reliefs found on a significant number of Javanese candi. As someone who has in the past struggled with identifying these reliefs and understanding their history and role in ancient Javanese society, I can attest to the immense effort that lies behind a work like this. Thus I have read this study with no small pleasure, knowing that future students will now have a reliable guide to the Tantri reliefs.
