Abstract In May, 1995, the Northern Territory of Australia (NT), with the passage of the Rights of the Terminally Ill Act (1995), became the only jurisdiction in the world to legalise voluntary euthanasia. In September, 1996, the first person availed himself of its provisions. The Senate's legal and constitutional committee is due to report to the Senate of the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia on Feb 24, 1997, on public representation with respect to the Act. The Senate is expected to vote on a Private Member's Bill after reviewing the committee's report. In view of the forthcoming vote, which may overturn the legislation, we present important new data on the level of approval of the legislation by community members, nurses, and medical practitioners in the NT, obtained as part of a larger study (submitted for publication).
