Abstract One of the unique properties of positrons is that as soon as they make contact with electrons they annihilate to produce gamma rays. This feature has been increasingly exploited in experiments to investigate the distribution of electrons in solids, liquids and gases. So it is surprising that the basic mechanisms for positron annihilation in molecular gases have remained contentious since the first experiments began more than 40 years ago.
