Abstract This paper reports on the initial stages of a research study funded by the Department of Emplyment Science and Training entitled "Discontintuities in Literacy and Numeracy Practices between Indigenous Community School and Urban High Schools". The purpose of this paper is twofold. First it highlights some of the tensions caused through being ethical and meeting agreed research goals. Second it is a narrative of a research journey to date.
