Abstract This correspondence provides a historical context to the assertion of Sharp and Whittaker [See The irreversible cattle-driven transformation of a seasonally flooded Australian savanna. (2003) 30, pp. 783-802] that overgrazing by cattle caused the conversion of treeless plains to woodland of the Victoria River floodplain. Data collected from a radiocarbon dating study support the conclusion of Sharp and Whittaker that the conversion of the grassland to woody vegetation was a unique and recent event given that it has no parallel in the last 3000 years of the environmental history of the floodplain. It remains unclear if the source of the soil organic matter was from the vegetation growing on the floodplain that has gradually accumulated in the soil profile through various pedogenic processes. It was possible that some of the soil organic matter was derived from soils higher up the Victoria River catchment, thereby confounding this interpretation.
