Abstract Despite the attention recieved by the standardisation debate, we are not close to any conclusive theory. Based on the reciew of literature, this paper argues that one of the impediments to our comprehensive understanding of standardisation is the absence of a rigorous definition of standardisation. Some items of this multi-dimensional construct are identified as a first step towards developing a common definition of standardisation.
