Abstract In the first years of this decade, academic staff in Australian universities have been faced with the challenge of adopting a new philosophy of education, together with innovative technologies for course delivery. Considerable complexity - cultural, technological, and organisational - is obvious when the case of developing and implementing an online learning project is evalutaed. This analysis has applied Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) to the investigation of the issues associated with a specific online learning project. In this case SSM provides a framework to examine and make sense of those situations that are not easy to understand and diffucult to act upon.
