Abstract We thank Hau et al. [1] for their response to our recent review in TREE [2], and agree that, in cases where most natural habitats have been lost, conservation efforts should be directed towards preserving the residual biota and reintroducing extirpated species. However, we disagree with Hau et al. on several points.
