Abstract This paper presents the results of a research project that sought to identify the core reasons competing destinations were chosen in preference to the NT by qualifying domestic travellers and to provide comparisons between the resources available at the chosen destinations and those perceived to be in the NT. In doing so, comparisons with previous studies of the Image of the NT were included in the project as well as product development recommendations based on the findings. It also raises some conceptual questions about the management challenges of multiple images for destinations and proposes future research directions to address these difficulties.
