Abstract The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) recently released the publication 2006 Population Distribution, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians which contains 2006 Census usual residence counts and Estimated Resident Populations (ERPs). This paper comments on selected data from the ABS report and reviews some of the challenges faced in attempting to measure the size, and changing size, of the nation’s Indigenous population.
