Description (note) This story is told by the Aboriginal people of Groote Eylandt at Angurugu, Umbakumba and Bickerton Island. It was told in the Anindilyakwa language by Gula Lalara and Nabilia Lalara and translated into English by Dugururru Lalara assisted by Julie Waddy. The illustrations are based on paintings of the story done by the children at Angurugu, Umbakumba and Bickerton Island Schools. The book was compiled by Jan Teagle Kapetas for the Angurugu Community Education Centre with funding assistance from the Commonwealth Specific Purpose Grants Country Areas Program. Dugururru Lalara’s work was funded by the Commonwealth National Aboriginal Languages Program (1988) and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (1992). The original story remains the property of the Anindilyakwa people.
