Abstract A microscopic theory of polymer ablation is presented here. Our results suggest that the surface bonds of polymers are broken due to localisation of a pair of excitations on the same bond in a chain. A laser fluence that can create paired excitations on the same bond defines the threshold laser fluence which is observed experimentally. Other results of the present theory agree very well with experiments and the existing phenomenological theory of polymer ablation.
