Abstract Terpyridine forms pink complex (λ max 668 nm) with magnesium in aqueous ethanol medium at pH 3.00. The method is sensitive and relatively selective. The colour is formed immediately and is stable for seventy-two hours. Zinc (200 mg); aluminium (10 mg); iron (III) (20 mg); manganese (1.5 mg); coppper (1 mg); lead (0.7 mg) and cadmium (1 mg) do not interfere with determination of magnesium. The method is also applicable to zinc base alloy.
