Abstract A paradox in Australian education is that the study of languages other than English is encouraged to promote cultural enrichment and intercultural understanding, and yet the process of becoming a qualified LOTE teacher in Australia tends to be intolerant of the cultural differences of overseas born and educated speakers of these languages. After a brief review of the literature on the difficulties experienced by overseas-educated LOTE teachers we present an introspective study of the development of one such teacher, including the circumstances that brought her to Australia, the difficulties she faced in teacher training and as a newly employed teacher, and the factors that enabled her to cope and eventually succeed. We will also relate her development to what it might mean to be an intercultural teacher of a language.
