Significance note Unusual dictionary for nurses, The Nurse’s Pronouncing Dictionary CDU Nursing Museum [Catalogue Number B148/Satchell F15] Doris Mary McMahon [uncatalogued photograph] This pocket-sized nurse’s dictionary is a “pronouncing” dictionary from 1926 “originally compiled by Honnor Morten with phonetic pronunciations by Mary L Burdett, member of Guy’s Hospital Past and Present nurses’ League”. This revised eleventh edition was published by Faber & Gwyer Ltd, the Scientific Press, in London. Text books were beginning to introduced for trainee nurses by the late 1930s in Australia. This dictionary was donated by Graham McMahon. It had belonged to his aunt Doris Mary McMahon who trained in WA in the late 1930s and served in the Australian Army Nursing Service in Papua New Guinea during WW2. Also donated were her Army badges/medals and ration book, as yet un-catalogued. The dictionary is a rare example of nurses buying texts at this date. Into the 1960s, many hospital schools still did not encourage trainees to buy tests! It is in a delicate condition. The hard cover has become detached and front and back are splitting from each other. The pages inside are generally brown
Provenance Notes Published by ? The Scientific Press, London. The 11th edition compiled by Honor Morten and Mary I Burnett. A book of pronunciation of medical terms for nurses.
