Significance note Northern Territory Bush Book CDU Nursing Museum [Catalogue Number B2/Satchell F1] CDU Nursing Museum [Catalogue Number B15/Storeroom Cupboard 3] The ‘Bush Book’ was a wonderful support for the beginning bush nurse when the first edition came out in 1974. Before this, nurses might carry with them such texts as they had bought during their southern hospital training which focused on hospital practice and rarely helped when working in remote tropical and arid environs nor with the varied clientele as a lone practitioner. The Bush Book was an initiative of Dr Don Jacobs and first appeared as: Bush Book Editorial Committee 1973 Bush Book – A loose leaf manual for Health staff working in the rural areas of the Northern Territory prepared by Northern Territory Medical Service. The next printed version was: DS Jacobs [Ed] 1979 Northern Territory Bush Book – A guide for field staff [2nd Ed], Northern Territory Department of Health. As the Central Australia Rural Practitioners Association [CARPA] in Alice Springs developed the first CARPA Standard Treatment Manual in 1992, there was a period when the Bush Book would be seen and used in Top End clinics whereas CARPA was in clinics administered out of the Alice. Today the Bush Book has disappeared and the CARPA manual is the standard manual for all bush practitioners. This 1979 Bush Book is in good condition and the 1973/4 edition also though with some browning of some pages being ordinary photocopy paper. They are both stored in an appropriate museum containers. Margaret Doherty donated both these copies
