Significance note Technical/research. Wimmera House, VRD [R Kerr 2012, Historical Society NT fieldtrip] This discussion of the social life of white women/wives/nurses on Top End cattle stations in the first half of the 20th Century analyses the complexity of caste and status in an apparent aping of life of the upper land owning classes of southern Australia. The role of the black women was as servant and all servants and mistresses and guests dressed formally for the various events. For many [most?] it was stepping into a previously unexperienced social style. Nurses at Wimmera House on VRD of the Australian Inland Mission were part of this social network and hosting both religious services and entertaining the locals was expected of them by John Flynn. Their diaries are full of stories of catering for visitors and visiting the ‘big house’ of the station manager. The many and varied social events from a Sunday walk in best clothes to race meetings and sports days and to formal dinners are outlined. There is discussion and analysis of why persist in the face of physical and psychological difficulties of life in the lonely North. Was it more than breaking the routine of harsh routine in a hostile environment? This article is copied onto acid-free paper and is in good condition. The work is readily available on-line from the NT Library.
