Significance note Dana Dabrowska: “Profile on Pat Ferrier” 23/2/1993 CDU Nursing Museum [Catalogue Number PM 234 / PM Folder 8] This article about Pat Ferrier [née Hanley] by Dana Dabrowska and written in consultation with her husband Ed Ferrier, is a brief but charming outline of Pat’s career in the Northern Territory. This is a story of nursing practice in urban and remote places in a bygone era. A first experience with Aboriginal patients in the Katherine Hospital and the renowned ‘Keefey’ [Sister O’Keefe1] showing the newcomer how it is done, is delightfully told. Pat was a triple certificate nurse [general, midwifery and infant health] and arrived in the Northern Territory in the mid-1950s. Except for brief periods overseas and five years in Canberra, she spent her nursing career in the Northern Territory, working in Katherine, Darwin, Batchelor, Maningrida, Adelaide River and Amoonguna. Towards the end of her career, she became concerned for the loss of historical value in disposing of obsolete instruments. With approval, she collected them. This large collection known as the Pat Ferrier Collection was a major early foundation of what became Charles Darwin University Nursing Museum and was presented to the Museum in 1988. [See also NP296 for presentation of her collection to the Nursing Museum.] The photograph below of Pat was probably taken at her hospital graduation. It is unclear who this article is written for or even if it was published anywhere. The only copy in the collection is on acid-free paper and is in good condition. 1.
