Significance note Jimarin quads – The Australian Women’s Weekly 15/5/1968 CDU Nursing Museum [Catalogue Number PM34A / PM Folder 5] This 15/5/1968 article in the Women’s Weekly features four pages of story and photographs of the Jimarin quads born at Darwin Hospital [Myilly Point] on 7/4/1968 to Mabel Mein-Bel of the Daly River Mission. The magazine cover also features the mother. The father is Dandy Gambang-Urra and the couple already had a number of other children, aged from 16 years down. This article is the cover page and pages 2, 3, 8 and 9 of the Women’s Weekly. In the days before in vitro fertilization, the birth of the quads was a first for the Northern Territory and a first for an Aboriginal Women. The mother was a “grand multipara” [more than six full-term births] with 7 living children and 1 child deceased. She was to have a twin birth after this quadruple birth [Sue Green, Nursing Museum volunteer]. It is noteworthy that the price then for the Women’s Weekly in Australia and New Zealand was 15c. A 2004 hand-written note filed with NP202 indicates the status of the quads as: Joan of Arc – died [heart disease] 1995 Regina now at Port Keats [Wadeye] and G3, P4 [3 pregnancies with 4 children] Ludi now at Pepperminati and G3, P3 [3 pregnancies and 3 children] Phillipa – died few weeks of age only There are also a number of NT News articles about the Jimarin quads catalogued in the Newsprint collection [NP201 & 202]. One features the mother on the front page and the other shows the infants in humidifier cribs with gavage tubes in situ also on the front page. Presumably this Women’s Weekly article is catalogued in the Printed Matter [PM] collection because it is in a magazine, though the publication was on newsprint paper. The complete edition of this 1968 Women’s Weekly is in the collection. Then printed on newsprint paper, it is now in poor condition. All pages are browning and page edges breaking up and torn. The cover pages [and thus page 2 also] are particularly bad and the cover page has had adhesive tape repairs in the past. There is no photocopy on acid-free paper of the article with the original magazine in the file.
