Item Name CYCLONE TRACY
Description Darwin Hospital 1974. Ward 8 ceiling showing damage from Cyclone Tracy.
Materials Colour photograph
Item Dates 1974
Significance note Historical importance for NT Health. Cyclone Tracy This is one of a series [P436 to P457] of photographs post-Cyclone Tracy and dated December 1974 or January 1975 showing damage to Darwin Hospital on Myilly Point. This photograph P443 is of the damaged ceiling of the Ward 8 [paediatrics], then the top floor of Kahlin block. While the damage to this, Darwin’s second hospital, is extensive, the photographs indicate clearly that large parts of the hospital were still usable after the Cyclone. Cyclone Tracy was unusual for its small area of intensity [its compactness] and its selective damage as some northern suburbs suffered 100% devastation while others had many livable residences still standing afterwards. The series seems to be originally colour photographs but all have faded badly to pinky-sepia..
