Significance note representative. Vincent’s APC CDU Nursing Museum [Catalogue Number MED1/Storeroom Cupboard 3] This small empty packet contained “genuine pink” Vincent’s APC tablets of Acid Acetylsalicyl [Aspirin] and Phenacetin and Caffein Cit, which were manufactured in Australia. Such compound analgesic oral medication rose to great popularity in the mid-Twentieth Century, particularly among women and was available off the shelf of the local chemist shop. Regular usage of phenacetin was reported in 1970 to cause interstitial nephritis and papillary necrosis, resulting in end-stage kidney failure and became unavailable in Australia.1 As regular dialysis for renal failure first became available in Australia in the early 1970s, it was most noticeable that there were significant differences in age and renal failure causation between female and male cohorts. In general, female patients were older and commonly with, or having had an analgesia addiction, while the males were younger and had often suffered acute streptococcal throat infections. This small cardboard packet is 7 x 4.5 x 0.7cm is in good condition for its age but there is some denaturing with darkening, browning of the paper cover of the card. It is stored in a mylar sleeve. 1.
