Abstract For long-term in-situ monitoring of colloidal dispersions there are numerous challenges associated with the design and construction of the fibre optic probe for the spectrometer. These challenges involve the fouling of the probe which causes the overall light intensity emitted and collected to reduce over time, maintaining the position of individual fibres within the probe as the probe is moved and providing real-time control reference measurements for calibration of the probe.

Spatially Resolved Diffuse Reflectance (SRDR) measurements is a specific method of spectroscopy where measurements are completed with a fibre optic probe where light is emitted through a source fibre perpendicularly to the surface of a sample and then collected through multiple fibres at varying distances away from the source fibre. This method is particularly useful for colloidal dispersions with high amounts of turbidity or optical density as the suspended particles scatter and absorb the photons that are passed through the sample.

Research into existing approaches for the design of the fibre optic probe for SRDR measurements and the challenges involved has provided useful information on how the fibre optic probe can be designed to be optimized for the challenges involved in long-term in-situ monitoring.
