Abstract This paper was a work in progress presentation for the author’s PhD studies into the late 1930s Commonwealth Government housing in the Northern Territory. This building type, although significant within the tropics of northern Australia, had never been fully examined prior to my own work. As a housing type it provides many useful lessons for a sustainable architecture for the hot-humid tropics with application within Australia and overseas. The presentation was made to the Society of Architectural Historians Australia and New Zealand conference at RMIT University, Melbourne and the paper was published in the proceedings following blind peer review.
