Abstract Developing effective teaching materials has always been a challenging and critical task for educators. The rapid advent of technological changes and related emergence of a new generation of digital learners has not made this task any easier. In this paper, we review the development of two content web sites for first year Information Technology university students. The site development was driven by our desire to provide authentic learning tasks in realistic contexts that catered for this new generation of learners.
