Abstract Longitudinal optical phonon assisted relaxation of excitons involving intersubband transitions is studied in quantum wells. Considering the relaxation of an exciton from a higher subband to a free electron-hole pair in lower subbands by longitudinal optical phonon emission, we calculate the rate of relaxation as a function of exciton density, temperature, and wave vector K-parallel to of the center-of-mass of exciton in quantum wells. The theory is finally applied to GaAs quantum wells and results are compared with experiment.
