Abstract Value chains are increasingly characterised by globalisation, customer responsiveness, channel integration and advances in ICT. Firms are aware of the growing importance in exploiting the competencies of their suppliers and customers in order to increase value. This research adopts a framework to explore the drivers of strategic alliances, the resources and skills integrated in a value chain, and how they contribute to sustainable competitive advantage. A qualitative and exploratory approach is adopted using twelve organisations in the New Zealand wine industry to support and extend the theory concerning strategic alliances and competitive advantage. The findings depict the various strategies and resources adopted in different stages of the value chain and how these primarily converge into integrated approaches among firms to achieve differentiation, superior performance and sustainable competitive advantage.
