Abstract This volume explores the historical, cultural and political contexts of religious and inter-ethnic violence by focusing on the recent conflict and unrest in the Moluccas and neighbouring regions. It brings together the work of a number of anthropologists with extensive research experience in Eastern Indonesia. A State of Emergency presents both cautionary accounts of the consequences of this conflict and encouraging views on the possibilities for reconciliation in Eastern Indonesia. Contributors: Sandra Pannell, David Mearns, Phillip Winn, Chris Healey, Jill Forshee and Dieter Bartels.
